U.S. News and World Report (USNWR) gave its 8/18/97 issue to the analysis of 18 “Great Science Mysteries”. Most of these “mysteries” are directly answered if the Bible is correct in its presentation of the history of the universe. These “great mysteries” are only mysteries because the correct answer has been eliminated before starting the scientific investigation!

“Is there life on other planets?”, has an obvious answer based on years of scientific investigation. Most biochemists know the answer to this question but they have been trained not to consider the obvious. Life is far too complex to have developed by natural processes. The information inherent within any living cell requires direct intervention from an outside intelligence (God). Furthermore, even with billions of dollars and thousands of scientists attempting to produce life using purified chemicals and sophisticated laboratory equipment ... no intelligent experimentation has ever come remotely close to producing a living organism from a mixture of chemicals.¹ Yet it is suppose to be happening by random processes all over the universe!

Another “mystery” was listed as - “How old is the universe”? Previous articles have shown that no dating method is 100% reliable, because all are based on unprovable assumptions. However, the vast majority of dating methods indicate that the earth is thousands, not billions, of years old. A straightforward reading of scripture would indicate that the earth and people have only been around for 6000 - 10,000 years. A thorough understanding of dating methods, without prior elimination of the possibility of instantaneous creation by God, shows this to be a perfectly reasonable scientific position. Dr. Russell Humphreys, a highly regarded Ph.D. Physicist at Sandia National Laboratories, has even shown mathematically how Einstein’s relativity laws explain why the universe “looks” billions of years old yet could have been created quite recently.²

Science can not even explain why both males and females exist. This is because evolutionism assumes that all life came from a sexless single celled organism. Evolution can not explain why (or how) this cell should ever have turned into two radically different types of creatures (male and female). Again the Biblical answer is obvious and demonstrable. The universe was created for man’s enjoyment and no creature other than a female can provide a suitable mate for a man (Genesis 2). A culture which does not value the sanctity of marriage and the family does not function well.

Another scientific “mystery” (which the Bible answers) is - “what caused the ice ages”? Creationists have demonstrated for years that the consequence of a worldwide flood would be increased ocean temperature. This would cause both massive extinctions (which we find as fossils all over the world) and greatly increased evaporation rates (which would have caused an enormous ice age). If accompanied by enormous volcanism (as the physical evidence seems to indicate), a global cloud cover would have caused a continuous snow in northern latitudes. The inevitable consequence when this scenario is feed into any global climate model is an ice age lasting for centuries.³

Almost all of the other “mysteries” would also be diminished by applying a straightforward Biblical world view. By starting with the correct assumptions, these scientific “mysteries” simply disappear. They are only mysteries because, like the magician preparing an audience for a magic trick, the correct answer has been eliminated from consideration before the investigation (or show) begins.
