<>SHOULD CHRISTIANS BE INVOLVED IN POLITICS? 

A Politician’s response:

Today, a very little publicized historical fact is that President James A. Garfield was a Christian Minister.  He said: 

“Now, more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress.  If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption.  If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature…If the next centennial does not find us a great nation…it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”<>

A Theologian’s Response:

     Charles Finney was arguably the greatest preacher during the Great Awakening, a time of incredible spiritual revival during America’s founding period.  He said: 

“The time has come that Christians must vote for honest men and take consistent ground in politics…God cannot sustain this free and blessed country which we love and pray for unless the Church will take right ground…God will bless or curse this nation according to the course Christians take [in politics].”

My Response: 

It is my hope that this class will bring you not only knowledge of our Constitution and the limited government our American Republic was founded upon, but a deep desire to become involved in the process of restoring that limited government. If you are taking this class, God has a part for you to play in America’s restoration.   If you get discouraged, remember the words of Edward Everett Hale:

            I am only one, but I am one.

            I can’t do everything, but I can do something.

            What I can do, that I ought to do.

            And what I ought to do, by the grace of God, I shall do.
