In our sports or sexy ads dominated world, a perfect “10” is easy to understand. It’s as good as it gets and is usually a rare event. There is some sense of value associated with getting a “10.” I remember 10 point quizzes in school and feeling good about getting a “10.” I’d like to build on this perfect sense of “10” and create a positive image about how we can affect our children on the Ten Commandments.
Periodically, surveys are taken of students on what they know. They use the same questions that were given to prior generations and measure how the answers have changed. In the 50’s, the average student could name between about four of the 10 commandments. They were taught and respected then, but are not taught in public school now. Today’s average student can name only one correctly, the seventh, Thou shalt not commit adultery. The most popular incorrect answer is Thou shall not drink and drive.
Awareness comes from exposure. Do you have the perfect “10” commandments posted in your home? Are they on the walls of your church? Would you be willing to encourage public businesses to post them in their stores? Just the reminder that Thou shall not steal, may save losses in their stores. After all, advertising does work when it is done repeatedly and memorably.
After all, even the supreme court agreed in its own ruling prohibiting them that, if they are posted in schools, children may read them and obey them. That’s why they are not there. The tragedy may also have been they were not in our homes, churches, or businesses even then.
Would you like to make a simple statement of your free speech. Post the Perfect “10” in your home, “try” it in your church, and encourage it in every public business. It will make a difference. It might even save your life. One of those commandments is Thou shall not kill.
I believe in the Perfect “10,” do you? Don’t you think everyone should?
