What Is Faith?

Do you know what faith is? Faith is our belief and trust in God. Faith is having total confidence in God’s promises to us. Faith comes through depending on God. When you go to bed each night you believe you will wake up in the morning. Whether you know it or not you are depending on God to wake you. Luke 17:6 says, “And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed ye might say unto this sycamine (mulberry) tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.” Matthew 17:20 says, “And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief, for verily I say unto you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you.” A mustard seed is a very small seed; in Bible times it was the smallest of all seeds. It is about the size of a pin head.

These verses tell us that you do not have to have an abundance of faith to conquer the obstacles of life. Faith is not measured by quantity, but by how it is directed. Nothing is impossible even with faith the size of a mustard seed, as long as your faith is directed whole heartedly in the belief that God can do anything. Did you know that mustard seeds planted in the Middle East grow to be over 12 feet tall with stems the size of a man’s arm! Although it starts out as such a small seed it grows into a huge plant. Faith is the same way, it may start out small but as we begin to trust and depend on God our faith will increase.

The mustard seed has to be cultivated before it can grow. It must be planted in the proper type of soil, it must receive the right amount of water, and it must receive the right amount of sunlight. We must also cultivate our faith in God. We must read our Bibles, obey God’s word, attend Sunday school and church, pray, praise God, and depend on God. If we do all these things our faith will grow like a mustard seed!
