Summary of Doug Wilder topic given at the ARK Foundation meeting July 14, 1997.
Summary of presentation: The root of evolution is the belief that all things are made of matter. In his time, Darwin was quite comfortable with the idea that atoms were eternal and changeless. However, since that time, the discovery of radioactivity has proven that even matter decays and must have had a beginning and will have an end. Despite efforts to explain the origin of matter as a result of a "Big Bang," the laws of nature prove that there is Law-Giver. Good science seeks to expose its presupposition (things we assume)--not hide them.

The intricate balance of forces which allows matter to exist and gives chemical property to matter cannot have happened by chance. Rather they demonstrate a plan, a design, and, therefore, a Designer.

The purpose of a Van de Graaf generator is to deposit a very large positive electrical charge on the metallic collector globe. This massive volume of charge produces the spectacular displays of lightning and other phenomena which will be demonstrated.

The attributes of God are displayed by the order of nature (Romans 1:20: For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.)

Demonstrations with the generator will include: (1) Hair Raising--hair standing on end as the result of repulsion, which is a force that would tear atoms apart if it were not for the mysterious power that holds them together (Colossians 1:17: He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.); (2) Electric Wind--electric charges being present in the air all around us and which can be set in rapid motion; (3) Lightning--an awesome natural phenomenon which can be demonstrated in miniature, and it shows in a small way god's power (2 Peter 3:10: But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up); and (4) St. Elmo's Fire--interesting glow effects, electric bulbs, and Aurora Borealis. Other demonstrations will include jumping spheres, electrostatic spraying, and others. All these demonstrations are interesting for children and adults to see, as well as interesting spiritual and creationist implications.
